Hello, friends! Got an old sweater that could use some jazzing up? Looking for a quick and easy refashion for Valentine’s Day tomorrow?? Follow this tutorial to create your own trendy heart sweater!
What You’ll Need:
- basic sweater
- yarn or similar material
- fabric pins
- needle & thread
First things first, lay out the sweater of your choice on a flat surface – I went with a basic black sweater, but any old sweater will do – and then decide on your design. Take your yarn, lay out the design on your sweater and then cut the yarn to the necessary length (like above). Once you have your design set, pin it in place so it won’t move around on you while you work.
Once your design is set, you are ready to start sewing it in place. If you are not a sewer, do not be intimidated, this could not be easier! Knot your thread – it will need to be a thick knot depending on how tight the knit of your sweater is! – and pull it up through the sweater next to your yarn.
Next, pull the thread across the yarn and insert it back into the fabric just next to where you pulled it through; this will hold your yarn design in place.
Repeat this process all along the length of your design in 1 to 2 inch intervals. I kept my thread pretty loose and placed the stitches farther apart because I don’t intend for the heart to be permanent. If you want your design to be permanent, however, you may want to make tighter stitches and place them much closer together so that the yarn can’t be easily pulled off the sweater. (see an example of my stitches below)
Once you reach the beginning again, simply knot off your thread and – voila! – wear your newly adorned sweater with pride!
