Thrift Style Thursday – Gotta Love Grunge

April 10, 2014

Hello, friends, Happy Thursday!  I have to admit that I had no idea what I was going to style for my “grunge” look, but I knew I wanted to come up with something, and guess what?  I had SO MUCH FUN!!  I’ve never been one to rock a particularly dark look.  Of course, I went through the typical “emo” phase in high school, but that pretty much meant I wore a band t-shirt and chucks with my jeans instead of a blouse and flats.  But, since starting this little style blog of mine, I’ve been able to rediscover what I love most about fashion: it’s fun!

I think what I loved the most about playing around with this week’s theme and creating this look was really just taking the chance to try something new and different.  Walking around the park heading to my favorite tunnel for the shoot, I felt like it was Halloween and I was playing dress up.  I guess this look isn’t so totally out of my norm; after all, these items were all in my closet, but still, it felt good to step out of my comfort zone and stretch some different creative style muscles.

I found this awesome running-inspired shirt in the men’s section at one of my favorite local Goodwill stores and did a quick refashion turning it into a tank top.  I love using an oversized men’s shirt because it’s loose and comfy, and long enough to wear with leggings like these camo print leggings I got at a swap meet in Las Vegas (along with this pair of leggings).

Ooh, also, a quick spotlight on these new neon pink aviator sunglasses I found in Target’s “Dollar Spot” for, you guessed it, only $1!!  They are a little cheesy, but clearly that’s never stopped me before; plus, my favorite pair of mint sunglasses broke the other day so I needed a replacement ASAP.  Another shout out to my new favorite bra!  I found this awesome tank top bra at Walmart for only $5, and even though you can’t see it, it has lace trim along the neckline so that when it shows under tops, it looks like a regular camisole.  They had a ton of other fun colors, and at only $5, I might just have to go get one (or two) more!

Details: plaid flannel shirt (Vans Outlet store) // tank top refashion (Goodwill) // camouflage print leggings (swap meet) // black moto boots (Roxy via DSW) // bracelets (handmade & gifts) // neon pink sunglasses (Target) // neon pink bobby pins (gift)

So, what do you think, did I pull off the grunge look??  Are you a fan of grunge style, and would you rock it??

Okay, before I “sign off,” I have a bit of a surprise… I finally decided to bite the bullet and upload my very first YouTube video!  While shooting photos of today’s outfit, I thought, “Why not shoot some video, too, and see what happens?”  So, I did, and then I put together a quick OOTD video.  It’s short and sweet and I hope you like it; and, as always, thanks for reading (and watching)! – Kristi :)

No really, thank you so much, it means so much to me to hear everyone’s encouragement! It’s so easy to look at my own stuff and pick out flaws, but its nice to know that no one else notices or cares!! Thank you, thank you! :)

Hahaha, um thank you…? Haha no really, thank you, I will just take that as a compliment and not a creepy comment at all! ;)
(Ps. I would credit my arms to yoga and holding heavy babies… and now I sound creepy haha, but I’m a nanny, I swear!)

Ah yes, I do neither of those activities and have horrible tendinitis in my elbows (that’s just an excuse really) so my arms remain an area that could use serious improvement!

Aw yikes, an injury is definitely a valid excuse, you’ve got to take care of your body! There are good tricks to protecting all your joints in yoga (I have tricky knees), you just have to find a good instructor who will help you learn. :)

Ahh! Awesome post and video. Totally rock the grunge look! I think it’s perfect but I think the clean white socks take away from the “darkness” of it. lol put some black socks on there and you’re golden! I love everything about it, the shirt is so flattering on you. That tunnel is a great shooting location, hopefully I can find something similar when I move!
Keep up the great work – you’re one of my favourite bloggers! xxx

Aww thank you!! Haha I totally realized after I took the pictures that it looks like I’m wearing socks, but I actually just rolled the leggings up; that’s the inside of the leggings! Oh well haha :)
I love this tunnel and always have since I was a kid (I used to imagine/wish it was a kind of portal to a fantasy world haha).
And thank you, that means so much to me!! I love your style, you inspire me to push my own style more! :)
