Sunday Review – The Croods

April 13, 2014

Hello, friends, Happy Sunday!  It’s been a while since I’ve posted a review, but my mom and I watched The Croods last weekend, and I am happy to report that it is delightful.  It was recently put up on Netflix, so if you have an account, I highly recommend you check it out.  Anyway, let me get to the review!

The Croods is a family/kids animation movie featuring the vocal talents of Emma Stone, Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Cloris Leachman, and many more.  The story centers around a family of cavmen who are forcded to venture outside of their familiar, comfortable cave in order to survive the impending threat of earthquakes and major tectonic shifts.  They get help from a young caveman living in the wild who begins to form an attachment to the teenage daughter of the family, much to the chagrin of the father and Man of the House, or er Cave.  Obviously, hilarity ensues.

So, while the story probably isn’t anything brand new or groundbreaking, it is fun, lighthearted and totally entertaining.  The film is absolutely charming, touching on the family dynamics that span all countries and, apparently, eons, and making it feel as though you could be watching your own family movies.  Between the sulky teenage daughter, the tag-along younger siblings, the nosy grandmother, and the overprotective father, the characters feel warm and familiar, but definitely not boring.

I laughed out loud while watching the cavemen discover amazing new technologies, like fire and shoes.  You may have seen a preview in one of the trailers, but I have to say that when the women of the family discover the joy of shoes for the first time, it is hilarious and an all too familiar scene.  There were so many fun moments in the film that really made me laugh; although, I have to admit that I am easily amused, so it may just be me!  ;)

All in all, the story was cute, the characters were engaging and the comedy was totally on cue.  I very much enjoyed watching The Croods, and if you are at all a fan of family animated movies, then I definitely recommend you check it out, too!

As always, thanks for reading!  – Kristi :)
