Hello, friends, and Happy Monday! I hope you all have a fabulous week, but just in case you need a little help getting out of bed and getting that morning workout started, here is a recipe to help!
People like to work out at all times of the day, but since I am an early riser, I like to get my workout out of the way first thing in the morning. It’s great for many reasons, but the one thing that makes it really hard is figuring out what to eat that I can digest quickly and easily so that I have enough fuel to keep me going. I stumbled across several similar recipes on Pinterest, and with a few tweeks of my own, I came up with this:
You will need:
- 2 cups oats – either rolled or steel cut or whatever kind you prefer
- 1/2 cup ground flaxseed
- 1 cup peanut butter – creamy, smooth, up to you!
- 1/4 cup honey – any kind you like
- **you may also choose yummy add-ins such as chopped nuts, chocolate chips, coconut flakes, etc. – get creative!
The steps are simple – combine all of your ingredients in a mixing bowl, form into small golf ball sized balls and refrigerate. If kept in a tightly sealed container, the bites will last up to 2 weeks refrigerated.
Yum! These turned out to be simple, but totally effective. I usually eat a banana before heading out the door for a quick jog or getting settled on my yoga mat, but these little energy bites are a great alternative. Packed with protein, carbohydrates, fiber, healthy fatty acids and magnesium, these bites are the perfect pre-workout snack, no matter what time you decide to pump up the jam!

The carbs, or simple sugars, in the honey are great for a quick energy boost, the protein in the peanut butter is perfect for sustained energy throughout your workout, the high magnesium content in the oats also helps maintain digestion and energy production within the body, and of course the fatty acids and fiber in the flaxseed are, well, just good for you (fatty acids can help lower blood pressure and are good for joint health). I have been enjoying these little bites for the past two weeks, and I have to say, I absolutely love them! They are sweet, salty, surprisingly filling, and, most importantly, perfect for sustained energy throughout my workouts. One bite is perfect for a quick 20 minute run, 2 are better for longer runs/workouts, but either way, they are tasty, and easy to grab and eat as I throw on my workout clothes, stretch and get to it!
