Earth Day with Schoola | Thrift Style Thursday

April 21, 2016

Even though the Thrift Style Thursday gals and I don’t coordinate our posts anymore, I still do plenty of thrift shopping and styling my thrifted threads!  So, when Schoola contacted me about taking part in spreading the word for their special Earth Day campaign, I couldn’t resist.  Talk about thrift shopping, saving the planet AND a great cause?!  I’m in!

Schoola is an online thrift store that sells clothing to benefit schools in the United States and through the Malala Fund internationally.  In fact, a whopping 40% of all their proceeds goes directly to benefit children’s education.  And they even go a step further by sending pre-paid donation bags that you can drop off at your local post office, completely free of charge!  (You can request a donation bag and get more info here.)

In case you didn’t know, Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd, starting back in 1970 in the U.S. and 1990 globally!  Earth Day Network – Schoola’s partner in this campaign – is working to spread awareness of the environmental movement and tirelessly campaigning to protect our planet for future generations.

Through consumer campaigns (like this one), Earth Day Network is able to educate, moblize and even affect change in public policy (think Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act)!  By donating your old clothes and shopping at thrift and consignment stores, you aren’t just recycling, you’re helping to save the planet.

For example, did you know that roughly 21 billion pounds of “post-consumer textile waste” (i.e. clothes, blankets, towels, etc.) ends up in landfills in the states every year?! (source)  Every time you donate your clothes instead of throwing them away, you’re saving precious space that would otherwise go to waste, literally.  And every time you shop at a thrift store, you’re using your voice as a consumer to ask for more recycling and less fast fashion.

I hope all this Earth Day stuff wasn’t too heavy handed, but I do strongly believe that donating old clothes (and housewares, electronics, etc.) and shopping at thrift stores is an easy way to do something good for our planet.  And companies like Schoola make it even easier with pre-paid shipping and donating proceeds to benefit children’s education.  It’s a truly a win-win for everyone!

What’s your favorite way to be environmentally friendly?  Are you going to request a donation bag from Schoola??

As always, thanks so much for reading!  :)

Delightfully, Kristi (signature)
