Description: This outfit was created with the intent of wearing it as a guest at my brother’s wedding. I couldn’t find anything I was entirely happy with in stores and couldn’t find anything I was happy with in my budget range online, so I decided to design and make an outfit for myself.
I found this gorgeous embossed fabric at JoAnn Fabrics & Crafts and immediately decided I wanted to make it into a full skirt, and the Cinderella-Inspired outfit was born from there. I found the coordinating iridescent light blue fabric for the top and the beautiful scalloped lace to go over it and then worked a design from the fabrics.
This is another outfit where I created the pieces entirely from patterns I made myself. This was really my first time creating my own patterns, but because I was making it for my body, it was pretty easy to work out fit and details like dart size and placement. Still, I am pretty proud of this top being my first hand-drafted pattern.
I will admit, however, that I had quite a bit of trouble with the top, mostly because I couldn’t decide exactly what I wanted to do with it, or how I wanted it finished. I knew I wanted to feature that scalloped lace for the hem and the neckline, but I also wanted to add something fun and maybe even a little sexy for the back. My mom came up with the idea of doing a cutout and that helped me decide how to finish it, with snaps at the neck and hidden snaps down the center back. It’s not the most elegant finishing, but it was a great learning experience! ;)
The theme of this piece seems to be that the fabrics really inspired the design. I knew the embossed fabric would be perfect for creating a full, box pleat skirt, and the scalloped lace was just begging to be turned into a top with a scalloped hem! The Cinderella inspiration really came out of the color palette and helped me decided on the accessories, like the shoes and ring which I also created myself. Here are a few extra shots from the planning stages and from the day of the wedding:
I took my time on this Cinderella inspired outfit, working on it in between other projects, making sure it was exactly what I wanted. It was a huge learning experience, but so much fun to see an idea, a sketch, come to life and become what I envisioned. It was also so cool to make and wear an outfit that I custom fitted exactly to my body – this is the most comfortable special occasion outfit I have EVER worn!
